It recalls a line from a song on the first half of the album, Betty : "But if I just showed up at your party, would you have me, would you want me?" This begs the question how much of Swift is hidden in the seemingly fictional stories on Understory, but that is where the quality of the album lies: Swift is the teenaged narrator of Betty, she is Betty herself, she is Dorothea, the runaway girlfriend in Champagne Problems and the soldier, bleeding out on the beach in Epiphany. "Would it be enough if I could never give you peace?" Swift sings, voice almost breaking. The writer herself disappears behind her creation, however, the record ends on a very personal note. Split up in classic Double Album fashion, the album starts off with songs seemingly rooted in reality – the retelling of a failed proposal, stories about the oh so tragic first love, tales of infidelity – but quickly leads us onto a path right into stranger's inner workings – be it Swift herself ( Mirrorball ) or a mourning divorcee ( Happiness ). Understory is a collection of myths, memories and "my friend told me" high school legends. “if there's smth i've learned from a million mistakes” (eotd) - just don’t believe they learned anything tbh.“wanna drive in the night till the end of the earth and go over the edge” (never enough) - okay flat earthers.olivia the song - simply bc harry tried to tell me that this was just a concept song when he was actually manifesting this entire time.“oh i wish i could be more like u” (hey angel) - okay let’s switch bank accounts then.“everything i need i get from u” (iwtwyas) - then why did u leave"oh u know i'm always coming back to this place” (a.m.) - define “always”.“u can call me when ur lonely” (temporary fix) - didn’t leave a number.“a necessity for apologies between u and me, baby, there is none” (walking in the wind) - um yes there is tf.
